Lalitgiri, Udayagiri and Ratnagiri in the Cuttack district of Orissa contain the largest concentration of Buddhist sculptures in India. These sites probably formed the University establishment collectively known as Pushpagiri, and was visited by the Chinese pilgrim Huan Tsang in the seventh century AD. The Sarnath school of Buddhist art spread to this region and shaped some of the finest specimens of sculpture of the post-Gupta period. This book is a result of the efforts of the late Professor Prabhat Mukherjee who worked untiringly towards developing this area for further research.
