The Peoples’ Linguistic Survey of India is a right based movement for carrying out a nation-wide survey of Indian languages especially languages of fragile communities such as nomadic, coastal, island, hill and forest communities.

This book is Part 1of Volume 6 ( Bihar  ki Bhaashyen [Hindi]) of The People's Linguistic Survey of India (PLSI) undertaken and executed by Bhasha Research and Publication Center, Baroda.

This present book contains the information on language and linguistic variety of the Bihar State of India supported by linguistic maps given in the appendix.

The languages included in this book are:
Scheduled languages - Urdu, Nepali, Maithili, Santhali, Hindi,
Non-scheduled languages -  Angika, Bhazzika, Bhojpuri, Magahi, and Surjapuri, and
Adivasi( Nomad ) Languages -  Asuri, Kudukh, Korva, Birhor, Maal Pahadiya, Mundari, and Ho.

Dr Ganesh N Devy taught English at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda; a renowned literary critic and activist; founder and director of the Tribal Academy at TejgadhGujarat; and director of the Sahitya Akademi’s Project on Literature in Tribal Languages and Oral Folk Traditions. He is an active participant in the functioning of Bhasha Academy. He was awarded the Padmashri in 2014.

He is Chair, People’s Linguistic Survey of India, 37, Bhasha Research and Publication Center, Baroda.

Dr. Vibha Singh Chauhan holds  Ph D from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi for her work on “Community in Fiction: A Study of Selected Novels in English, Hindi and Bangla”. She has been teaching undergraduate students for more than thirty years now. She has authored many books including  Cultural Diversity, Linguistic Plurality and Literary Traditions in India which is a prescribed textbook for a course in University of Delhi. She has published extensively in reputed national and international journals. Her areas of interest are Non-Urban Cultures and Literature, and Translation into English from Bhojpuri and Hindi.

Currently, Dr  is Associate Professor in English Department of  Zakir Hussain Delhi College affiliated with University of Delhi. Dr. Chauhan is a member of Indian Association of Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies, Maithili Bhojpuri Akademi, Delhi.
